Management and organisations Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3500 words
Management and organisations - Essay Example As far as Khurana (2010) is concerned, he has but made a differentiation between university-based business education and private business education because in his view, the legitimacy and credibility imparted to a university-educated business graduate by the industry as well as the general public makes it mandatory that such business students/professionals orient their profession in harmony with public good (Khurana, 2010) . Khurana (2010) has reminded his readers that the 125 years old univerity-based business school system, though initially meant for the professionalisation of management study, is now run by a ââ¬Å"managerialistic logic that emphasized professional knowledge rather than professional ideals, and ultimately by a market logic that taken to its conclusion, subverts the logic of professionalism altogetherâ⬠(p.7). I also agree with this opinion as I have always felt that managers of most business establishments have no problems of conscience in using unethical means to achieve their ultimate end, that is, enhancing the profits of their company. After arguing in this line, Khurana (2010) has called for the balancing of university-based business school education in the favour of ââ¬Å"professionalism and professional leadershipâ⬠(p.20). He (Khurana, 2010) has also stressed the need of this realignment in four areas of the interactions of such business schools, namely, ââ¬Å"student, faculty, business, and society at largeâ⬠(p.20). ... He (Khurana, 2010) has also stressed the need of this realignment in four areas of the interactions of such business schools, namely, ââ¬Å"student, faculty, business, and society at largeâ⬠(p.20). In totality, what Khurana (2010) has tried to focus is the questions related to the abandoning of the notions of public good in management education, which I also feels to be the need of the hour. From the definition offered by Oxford English Dictionary that public good is actually common good, to the definition given by Barley (2007) that ââ¬Å"public good is where externalities happenâ⬠, there are a wide range of definitions for public good (p.202). Calhoun (2006) has reminded that what is expected from a university-based education system are mainly four ââ¬Å"public missionsà ¢â¬ - imparting education for training people in ââ¬Å"occupations traditionally centered on public service,â⬠furthering ââ¬Å"social mobility,â⬠developing ââ¬Å"new technologies,â⬠and providing information needed for ââ¬Å"the public sphere and also prepare the citizens to participate in itâ⬠(p.10). It is also observed that the ââ¬Å"direct governmental financing and governance of universitiesâ⬠is necessitated by the notion that universities have to ââ¬Å"contribute to the public goodâ⬠(Calhoun, 2006, p.10). I want to remind here that whatever finance that reaches universities from the government is actually the taxes paid by the people. But as is criticized by Calhoun (2006), when

The choice of colour gives the first impression of the website to the customer. The advertising agency has to employ a basic, but professional design such that the website will have a moral and attractive layout (Plummer et al, 2007). The colours must have a strong contrast. This website has employed proper mixture of colours, which make the website have an attractive, classic design (Plummer et al, 2007). The colours that the website uses are three brown, white and black. The only different colour that the website employs is where the advertisements are displayed at the centre of the page. These colours are separated appropriately so that the contrast is valid to the function of the site. The website has employed the classic moving images that flow in with the advertisement. This brings in effect of a quality website design. The images move in a manner that indicates professionalism, this is such that images are not nagging the customer as he/she browses through the website (McGrath, 2008). The images are also hyperlinked so that when a customer likes an item in display he or she just has to click on the image and is switched to the webpage that has the items details (McGrath, 2008). The website employs the use of a suitable font that enables a customer to read whatever is on display without any hindrance (McGrath, 2008). One should not have to struggle to read thing that are displayed in a website, the website designers have to incorporate an appropriate font that will make the website use without requiring magnification. This website is an excellent example of a website that has employed quality fonts to pass across the message (McGrath, 2008). Analysis of movie knowing her place indu krishnan - Essay Example Growing up in a liberal society in the United States for immigrants like Vasu already requires for a series of psychological and emotional adjustments in order to fit in the society. Physical appearance, language, and tradition are but the easiest to get acquainted to in the society that is different from what oneââ¬â¢s parents have grown up to, especially for young children. On the other hand, an appalling dilemma for these children is to be brought back to the society in which they have grown out of for more than a decade in their lives. When Vasu was brought back to India at a stage when she was going through her adolescent stage, every day has been a struggle since. Her life back in the United States after getting married as a teenager due to a cultural norm, life has become a huge battlefield. There were bigger challenges and heavier social and cultural responsibilities as a wife and mother. Women like Vasu have to get acculturated to the various roles that are perceived to b e played by women in the society against men. If it is Krishnaââ¬â¢s goal to reveal womenââ¬â¢s cultural schizophrenia with cross-cultural background (Hoppe, ââ¬Å"Knowingâ⬠& wmm.com, ââ¬Å"Knowingâ⬠) to the world, this movie definitely did much justice to their experiences through the main character in the movie. Cultural identity is essential in womenââ¬â¢s competence upon accomplishing their roles and responsibilities to their family and the society. Book Review on Jacob Riis' How the Other Half Lives Essay
Book Review on Jacob Riis' How the Other Half Lives - Essay Example He strongly believed that the upper society can make a strong impact to the lives of these impoverished people and that it was only possible through their support and contribution that the slums of New York could change shape and the people living there could be provided with the basic amenities of life. At the time when this book was written, camera with the flash technology were newly invented, therefore, Jacob A. Riis equipped his book with pictures of the slums because he felt that only words would not have the due impact which the pictures accompanying them would. The book talks about life in tenements. The tenements which were particularly what the author of the book hated about the life that he lived in the slums. In the following quotation from the book the author expresses his reasoning behind the animosity he held against the tenements; ââ¬Å"In the tenements all the influences make for evil; because they are the hot-beds of the epidemics that carry death to rich and poor alike; nurseries of pauperism and crime that fill our jails and police courtsâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Riis, 1890). The former statement shows what the author felt about the slums, he felt that the slums were where the crime began, where diseases started from and a breeding ground for many of the vices that existed in the country. The language used in the novel reflects the fact that it was written in the late nineteenth century, the author needs to be given credit for portraying the dialect of many of the minority groups living in the slums of New York with such perfection that while reading the book one feels that one is actually hearing the people of the slums talk instead of just reading. Moreover, the use of imagery is extremely impactful; oneââ¬â¢s imagination can instantly picture the landscape and smell the different types of smells that the author has described in the book. The unhygienic feel gets so vivid n oneââ¬â¢s memory that one actually feels appalled at the harsh realit ies of this world and the stark contrast that exists in the living standards of the people living not only in the same country but also in the same city. However, the difficulty with reading the book is that some of the sentences and paragraphs are so long that the author starts by talking about a particular thing and stretches it so much that by the time the paragraph ends he is talking about a different thing which makes it difficult for the reader to keep track of the stated facts. A very central point that has been stressed a lot in the book is that people of different nationalities come and settle in the tenements. These people as stated by the author make their way into metropolitans in search for a chance to make an impact on their lives and those of their families. The author states that if we try to compare the poor Americans to people of other nationalities who come to New York in order to earn and make their lives better, the foreigners make stronger progress in terms of work and careers because they come in search of opportunities and are quick to grab them whenever possible, as opposed to the Americans who would rather wait for the opportunity to come to them as expressed by the following quotation from the novel; ââ¬Å"The poorest immigrant comes here with the purpose and ambition to better himself and, given half a chance, might be reasonably expected to make the most of itââ¬

Edward de Bono thinking tools The ââ¬Å"Six thinking Hatsâ⬠is an important powerful tool used to make decisions from different perspectives. Edward de Bono created the tools, which assists individuals to think outside from their normal thinking style. Product producers think in a very rational and positive point of view. This is the reason as to why the end up in success. Many however fail to look at the problems from a creative, intuitive, emotional or negative point of view. This means that the success is only limited to the positive thinking only. They forget that through analysis of the negative aspects creates a better approach of promoting the success of the organization. On a different view, pessimists may extensively support ideas on an emotional aspect failing to analyze decisions rationally and calmly. The thinking technique involves the white hat, red hat, black hat, yellow hat, green hat, and blue hat (Mycoted, 2011). The white hat focuses on the available data where an analysis of information available aids in learning various aspects. While thinking on the aspects, make an analysis of the elements that fill up on information missing. The ââ¬Å"white thinking hatâ⬠analyses the past trends and extrapolate from historical data. The red hat thinking involves analyzing problems using gut reaction, emotion and intuition. The thinking involves the emotional aspects of other people involved in the thinking circle. Involving peopleââ¬â¢s logic assists in analysis of the last reasoning (Runco, 2007). The black hat of thinking involves looking at the negative aspects of the made decision. With defense and caution, analyze on the possibilities of it not working. It is important as it brings out the weak points of the decision. This enables the plan to be refined through elimination, alteration or creation of counter plans. The black hat thinking aspect enables decisions to stand tough grounds and be resilient. It assists in realizing fatal decision making before making a decision. The advantage of this thinking mechanism is that it concentrates on the negative aspects hence eliminating flaws in the decision-making process. This prepares individuals of difficulties arising from the made decision. The yellow hat of thinking concentrates of positive thinking mechanisms. It takes an optimistic point of view giving only the positive outcomes of the decision. The green hat relates to creativity. It involves developing creative solutions to a problem involving a freewheeling with minimal criticism. The blue hat represents the process control. The blue hat

Was the modernist architect becoming too authoritarian and dogmatic Research Paper
Was the modernist architect becoming too authoritarian and dogmatic - Research Paper Example It is evidently clear from the discussion that architects in the 20th century chose to enhance authoritarian social relations, sought to enhance social control in general and their proportion of social change in specific, and embraced many dogmas to enhance their professional importance. While architecture must use advanced mathematics to construct a building, and certainly architecture is artistic insofar as it is representative of a society's preferences for spaces and is a statement of intent or design on the part of a person, architecture itself must be defined socially in a particular fashion. ââ¬Å"[W]hat characterizes architecture today is its capacity to be studied as a system of significations that establishes different levels and layers of meanings and sense and constitutes one of the symbolic spheres instituted by societyâ⬠. Hays argues that since 1968, architecture is a ââ¬Å"technical-ideological practiceâ⬠. As a consequence of this, Hays concludes that it is absurd to call any individual architect or even architecture as a whole ââ¬Å"hermeticâ⬠or ââ¬Å"elitistâ⬠or authoritarian because it is like calling rain wet: Architecture as an institution is a collective arranging of power as a technical-ideological collective. But architecture, unlike other areas where there is a monopoly of technical power being exerted, must be brought under special criticism because its designs move into the public realm. These are two immensely different concepts. To use a political analogy: Clearly, decisions must be made, but when those decisions are made by one person, it becomes authoritarian. The model of the architect as artist is thus structurally and intrinsically authoritarian, because the idea is that the architect's vision as to how to implement stakeholder needs is implemented and other people in the chain such as customers and workers are irrelevant. Each worker, each customer, each visitor, each policy-maker brings their own touc h to the art that is the final building, sometimes a vital one. The architect tries to form order out of chaos, a chaos that it assumes into existence but has no independent reality, just like all other authoritarians, and does so by trying to make it so that others in the process merely carry out orders and directives or by managing their perturbations and deviations from his ideal vision. Doesn't this mean all art is authoritarian? There is a truth to that, but the authoritarian nature of the self is also called ââ¬Å"autonomyâ⬠. When a painter is authoritarian about their process, they are committing no great wrong. They are the only person directly involved, and a customer is free to accept or reject their painting. But architects are far from this. An architect will build public spaces that must be used by people who had no direct veto power or influence into the style being built. This becomes especially true when one considers the idea of artistic spaces being imposed u pon people because they are artistic, to enrich the philistine. This attitude is fundamentally elitist: If most people don't care about artistic spaces, then imposing that onto them is anti-democratic.
